now isn't that copying? doesn't that infringe certain copyright laws? unless they are home movies. Copyright laws are setup to prevent people from making money off of your stuff or prevent them from copying things so they don't have to pay for them (in other words "stealing") I would think that if he had ONCE paid for the VHS, he should have the right to upgrade it so that he can keep it forever. Because VHS tapes lose quality after many years. Think of it like a backup disc. I have a backup disc for StarCraft just incase I break the original. However! If they were copys meant to make money or steal the video without paying then it would be against the law. Also, if he sold the VHS tapes after making the backup, that too would be against the law since that would be making money off of them. Even though they were the oringinals, he would still then have the backups, so thats like getting the movie for free isn't it? Since there is now a backup, the VHS and the backup are now a set, so if he sold one, he'd have to include the backup along with it. You can just trash the VHS though, cause you need proof that you own the movie. So even if it was all messed up and unable to play, you still need to keep the tape for proof of ownership.

Yeah, VHS lose quality after so many yrs. and since I paid for them, I should be able to keep them.
I'm really carefull with my discs, I never touch the bottoms.

i try very hard never to touch the underside of any disc as its can be awkward trying to clean them and sticky fingerprints means you scrach them more than before! i always place discs back in cases too so not to loose tham or accidentally scratch them!
