Tennis: Davydenko beats Gaudio
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2005 Nikolay Davydenko beat Gastón Gaudio on Wednesday and gained a place in the Masters Cup semifinals. Davydenko was assured of that place when Fernando González, a late replacement for the injured Andre Agassi, registered a 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 victory over Mariano Puerta later Wednesday. Davydenko, a Russian ranked seventh, broke Gaudio's serve twice in each set in a 6-3, 6-4 victory, his first over the 26-year-old Argentine in six meetings. Davydenko wobbled with victory in sight. Leading 5-2, he dropped serve. He had a match point in the eighth game, but again couldn't convert. Facing triple breakpoint in the 10th game, Davydenko rallied to force deuce with an overhead crosscourt shot and then secured victory with two forehand winners. Davydenko, who beat Agassi in his first match, is 2-0 and Gaudio is 1-1 in round-robin play in the Gold Group, which lost No. 2-ranked Rafael Nadal and No. 5 Agassi to injuries on Monday. The season-ending Masters Cup schedule had Agassi listed to meet Nadal in Wednesday's marquee matchup. Instead, Chinese fans saw two replacements: Puerta of Argentina and González of Chile. Puerta, who lost the French Open final to Nadal, came in for the Spaniard and lost to Gaudio on Monday. González is filled Agassi's place. On Tuesday night, the tournament suffered another injury scare when top-ranked Roger Federer asked for treatment at the start of his third set against Ivan Ljubicic. After a quick rub on his right leg from a physiotherapist, he held on 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4) to secure a semifinal spot from the Red Group. "I was never in doubt I was going to finish that match - maybe people in the stadium were," Federer said.
