I'm working on this project where I'm designing a mission that consists of three space probes, which would be sent to Europa ( a moon of Jupiter ) to do some exploration. Now, scientist predict that there could be 2 to 3 miles of ice on that moon... but really we have no idea.. it could just be a thin sheet of ice. But basically I want to have the capability of drilling 2-3 miles deep into the ice if necessary to discover if there is any life in the methane ocean. Does anyone have any ideas on what kind of machine I might want to use to drill that deep. I'm pretty clueless.

don't know, but they must have something to do that.
I was going to say "Drilling Machine", but nah, thats too obvious. LOL

Hey, kool info. I heard that "Titan" (one of the moons of Saturn) has an atmosphere; and they said that when they get around to exploring there, it may be possible to live there. (I'm not sure what the temprature would be there though.) I wish we could go to other galaxies and visit other planets (thats why I watch StarGate SG1)

Maybe whatever it is they use to drill for oil? I don't know what they call it.

a portable oil rig that would seem to be the most viable machine but it would have to be miaturised so that it fits into a rocket! how about the machine of armageddon! the armadillo thing! that dug 800+ feet in a couple of hours and that war iron so ice would be no problem!

The major issue with suggestions of a huge drilling machine is power. Solar power is not an option because sun doesn't really go out that far to power anything and a huge battery won't work because it'll be too heavy for taking up. Hehe this is a really hard question.

They should use a ZPM (If it was real. LOL)
Zero Point Module (from StarGate Atlantis [SG1 for a short time too])
