When I think about when something happens to me that matters, usually the more important it was the more it was either unexpected or I wasn't prepared for it. I don't know if that is just me not taking serious problems or events seriously enough, but I also think that when people prepare for stuff, they are sometimes setting up for something to be unexpected when you get there. So if you want to control where you are going you are supposed to prepare for the unexpected. Does that make sense in the way that prepare for the expected does? Also, I think that if it is unexpected then it becomes more important because either, you try to react too quickly or have to, or something with what you were doing is wrong now. But I think what is really important here is, If you could expect everything and plan, would everyone still be free to make choices? That leads people to give an event a % chance of happening, or say "maybe.." or just not be prepared sometimes. I'm not saying you have to be prepared always for everything. I think what is important all of the time is that you are as ready as you want to be to make a choice quickly since that is how you get around alot of unexpected parts happening to you. You still could not control other people but you would not wait around and lose options, have to deal with new ones, and you can get back to easier answers etc. I think this is part of why you learn life's lessons and study about what is right or wrong and that, so you are ready when you have to make a choice quickly, yourself, and then can move into another choice quickly or the part where you get ready for the next choices to come or chances to change choices again.
