We now have players and recorders that use both DVD±R discs. On the other hand, HD-DVDs and BDs are made totally by competitors and I doubt they will become cross-compatible.

Ah yeah, HD-DVDs and BDs are going to be like 8-tracks and cassette tapes I guess then. You cant play one with the others system. Maybe there will be some kind of converter some day. Or maybe you can put it onto a computer and then change it to the other type. These are exciting new formats and I'm excited to see what they can do with them. If it ends up they use like 10% or so of the disk space (like they have done with other systems in the past, look at some of those games that were so short) I will be disappointed. Maybe they'll just have really high res videos and images? Still though, the space of 100 GB or more is possible and that is mind boggling, you can fit alot in there, I hope they make the games better too not just shinier and with more special effects.

I heard from IGN.com that Sony has already filled the 25 GBs that are on the launch titles. They say that the 50 GB discs should be widelly (sp?) used within one year. I'm so hyped about the Wii and PS3 releases Nov 17th (PS3) and Nov 19th (Wii). I not only want to play new games, but also the ones I haven't played since selling my GC!!! I haven't played Billy Hatcher or Pokémon Colo/Box in a long time. Pokémon XD has just went down to $30 from $50. ============================== Added with edit: Source: ps3.ign.com/articles/739/739692p1.html

Thanks for the link. I'm also looking forward to having the backwards compatible systems come out and play the Gamecube games on them or the PS2 games on them. Have you heard about their systems for what the backwards compatibility will work like? Is there any boost to the graphics or any change? Also, will you have to download any new software or patch to run some games? Will the previous generation's games run well on the newer systems?
Xbox 360 has the problem that for some reason they didn't build it able to play all of the Xbox games, but instead through Xbox Live make people get the patches they need to be able to run the games, and they don't even have all of the games done. Plus some of the games run poorly or are glitchy, which happens I guess with emulators or something but its disappointing, the Xbox 360 does a worse job running the Xbox games than PS2 did of PS1 games, as far as I know, and you have to download stuff from Xbox Live to play them! Probably its just a plan to make people use Xbox Live as much as possible.
What do you think about the backwards compatibility of these new systems, how is it going to work, like the PS2 did? Did the PS2 run EVERY game the PS1 had, did they all work pretty well? Seemed pretty good to me but there were some problems.. what problems have you guys seen before running PS games on PS2? We might see those problems again running PS1 or PS2 games on the PS3.

The PS2 had only about 2 or 3 games that it couldn't play out of all the PS1 games made. Some others just had some problems. The only trouble I ever had was that "The Legend Of Legaia" ran kinda slow in some parts of the game, but other than that, it was pretty good.
I haven't heard anything about the new systems yet though.

Well assuming that the PS2 system will be set up and emulated to play PS2 games on the PS3, then hopefully PS1 games will run as well as they did back on the PS2. But you know with these newer systems there are usually a few performance issues on the old games if they don't program it right or if its hard to run the older game for some reason. Hopefully though they have spent so much time making these systems that all of the problems like playing older PS2 and PS1 games have been fixed.

I had more problems playing SC:BW on my old Packard Bell (133 mhz) than my new comps. You'd think that newer is better, but lets just hope they don't miss any bugs this time.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Hours?!?!?!?!?
It was more like 24 hours BEFORE the release.
Well, I don't really know what it was like in Japan, but in the US, we were camping out the morning before release. In some place (big cities) they were pitching tents and making camp fire and started a WEEK before release! Yes, even here in my small town there were some people with tents and camp fires. (Yes, more than one fire)
Update on PS1 and PS2 compatibility: The PS3 can NOT play the old games yet!!! Sony is really far behind! Some of the PS2 games play, but VERY FEW! They did say that they will patch this later on though. So anyone in the UK may actually be lucky!! ROTFLOL

lucky i don't think so just cos the patch will take time it will not be sorted by the UK release date, this means UK may even have a longer wait for the illusive PS3.
